or , is a way to get search engines to give your web-site a better ranking position so that potential customers or anyone who is looking for your web-site can see it without digging deep in the results. The higher you are in the search engines results, then the better chance you will have doing business on the internet.

Here are simple steps to optimize your web-site:

Step 1: Use a descriptive title in the < title > section of your website </title >. Be as clear and straight to the point as possible not using more than 70 characters in length including spaces. Going over this limit will actually make your result about 4 charachters less in the search results and the last 4 characters will be replaced with a space and 3 dots like ” …” as a way of indicating to the reader that the title is longer than they can read in the search results.

Step 2: Add relevant tags - Add or make changes to Meta tags, that are on topic with the Title tag. The description meta tag should be clear and concise and be 150 characters or less. The H1 tag is going to carry a lot of weight and will be considered as the topic of the page so it better match your title, H2-H6 tags are considered sub headings and they should support your main topic. kind of like a Newspaper is written. Then alt and title=”keyword” tags for images, after keywords research. title=keyword” tags are placed in images and are used like anchor text is in a text link.

Step 3: Link building is also very important from internal linking to external linking. Use in the links that match the words used in the title we already mentioned. Social bookmarking is a great way to get a few good external links. try digg, delicious and propeller to start out. Website statistics monitoring and conversion tracking is also important for tracking your success and fine tuning what is working vs not working for you. There are several free offline methods that you can use to optimize your web site and it all involves your URL or your Web Domain name. Put your web domain name on business cards, stationery, have a sign on your car, use bumper stickers or have tee shirts and coffee mugs made with the URL. Then try to do everything to advertise your web-site offline. This is called offline optimization of your website.

Step 4. Stay away from black-hat practices. Black-hat is when the methods are dishonest, illegal or against the terms of use of the search engine’s policies. Blackhat methods are used by some to get their website in the top results by ways that are not honest ways. It is funny to me that these individuals think that black-hat methods work better than white-hat (honest) methods. There are far better white-hat methods that work well and will not get your site banned from the BIG guys like Google and Yahoo. Practice safe , and use your best judgement about what you think is honest vs. dishonest. Example: white text over white backgrounds to hide text from human visitors but not from search engines is an old trick that will have your site banned very quickly. Don’t do it!!!

So web site optimization is both and online and offline process. Online, you must use internal factors and external sources to attract customers and get good search engine rankings. Use honest methods. Then offline, you can advertise your easy to remember web address to the public to get the to visit your web site.
